Assignment 2: Exposure Triangle.

APERTURE

Photos from my experimenting with shallow depth of field.
Shallow depth of field, focus on FOREGROUND.
Photobucket
Small aperture, shallow depth of field, with focus on the leaves in the foreground! :D

Photobucket
Shallow depth of field with a focus on my friend in the mid-foreground! I like how the background turned out blur and out of focus though the subject remained perfectly clear and focused!

Photobucket
POPCORN. shallow depth of field, with a small aperture! can you tell that I love shallow depth of field photos? xD

Photobucket
This is a funny shot of 2 friends of mine, with a relatively shallow depth of field!

Photobucket
The next few photos were a little difficult to take, due to the poor lighting/lack of lighting, due to the photos being taken at night. Here's a lily with shallow depth of field.

Photobucket
Shallow depth of field, focus on the subject in the foreground.

Photobucket
Flowers taken in the moonlight! I thought it was interesting how the moon looks a little like the sun in this picture! Awesome, isn't it? haha...

Photobucket
CAUGHT IN THE ACT!
a little sad that I didn't get the best angle of them, though.

Photobucket
I admit that this shot was taken by accident. But the cnated angle and the blurry focus turned out to be rather appealing to me!

Photobucket
Tried to blur out all parts of the photo except for my pretty phone cover!
But the focus on the cover isn't as sharp as I hoped!

Photobucket
Focus on the camera lens, blurring the background AND foreground.
I actually really like this shot! hehe.

These next few shots were taken a lot later in the semester, but I like them even better than the ones I started out with. :)

Caps @ Bugis Street

A2_3
Kinder Bueno! one of the best chocolates ever.

Photobucket
some pretty bottles at an exhibition at orchard central! there were hundreds of them!

A2_5
tweaking the white balance gave a warm, orangey effect.

A2_6
but i liked the clear transparent bottles better. :)

A2_7
a typical flower shot, shallow depth of field, flowers blurred out in the background. i contemplated using this as my A2 submission for shallow depth of field, focus on foreground, but preferred the bottles shot in the end.

A2_8
I guess flower shots are just too common. But they're still pretty. :)

A2_9

A2_
my CCA shirts :)

Photobucket
another CCA shirt! with my name on it. my name was focused! i'm so happy :P

Photobucket
taken in the car on the way to dinner!

Photobucket
cool Japanese wine bottles! at an awesome Japanese restaurant.

Photobucket
also taken at the Japanese restaurant! it's such a pretty lamp. :)

Photobucket
Indonesian Panggan at the deck!

Photobucket
candy from Candy Empire at Vivo!

Photobucket
more candy! I had to hide at one corner outside the shop to take this because the Candy Empire staff were eyeing me and my camera suspiciously. :/

Shallow Depth of Field: Focus on BACKGROUND.
Photobucket
This is one of the few pictures that I took that is of low aperture and focus on the background. (since my friend, Yuko, the subject, is in the background) I quite like the effect created. Especially since Yuko looks so adorable here! xD

Photobucket
Another picture with low aperture and focus on the background. My senior Lina's lovely shoes!

Photobucket
A picture taken during my CCA auditions, with the focus on the background, once again.
Freshies working hard to make it through!

DEEP DEPTH OF FIELD: experiments.

A2_10
a beautiful scene from the rooftop of Orchard Central. the buildings in the far background are still in focus!

Photobucket
Landscape view of the aerial view at Orchard Central.

SHUTTER SPEED experiments.
Photobucket
Here, I got a friend to help me experiment with shutter speed! Though the photo didn't turn out fantastically well, I think the experiment worked pretty well. :)
We set the camera mode to manual and played with the shutter speed, keeping the Aperture and ISO exactly the same.
This picture was set to a relatively LOW shutter speed. Hence the motion of my hands is blurred and out of focus. Also the picture is relatively bright.

Photobucket
This picture was set to a relatively HIGH shutter speed, keeping the aperture and ISO the same.
As a result, the picture was able to freeze the motion of my hands (though I was moving them pretty quickly), but the picture turned out really dark.

This was because the aperture was set the same for both pictures, hence the second was severely underexposed! :D There, I've learnt something new!~~ heheh.

Photobucket
at a relatively high shutter speed, in an environment of low light conditions, I managed to take a photo with interesting effects! This looks like some club, though in real life, it was a lot brighter and less...pink. HAHA.

Photobucket
The next series of shots were taken during a dance performance I went to watch. Several of my friends performed for it, so I was busy snapping photos of them at high shutter speed! It wasn't easy at all, though!
This is probably one of my favourite shots of the night. My senior, Karen, posing on stage!
(the Canon 550D has a very powerful zoom lens!!)

All these were taken at a relatively high shutter speed, but not too high because it was night time:

(these fireworks looked so good live, I was hoping I'd be able to capture at least some of that wonder on film!)

Photobucket
(Mazlan: by the way, this routine Mazlan was dancing was REEEALLY fast, some parts of it still appeared blurry despite the high shutter speed!)

Photobucket

Photobucket
(Colourful UG, I love the colour of their costumes!)

FREEZE ACTION

Photobucket
some seniors did a hair flick, and I caught the moment just as they tossed their heads back up.

Photobucket
Juniors practising their audition routine! I waited for the JUMP in the choreo just to snap this shot :)

Photobucket
after some post-processing, I successfully managed to make it seem as if Adi has achieved enlightenment. xD

Photobucket
jump shots are my favourite freeze action shots ever! My juniors are always so cooperative and willing to help me in these experimental shots!

Photobucket
another jump shot!

Photobucket
really like this one, because their lines are beautiful!

Preparing for the Photoshoot.
I did this shoot a lot later in November at the new *scape building at Orchard Cineleisure.
Photobucket

Unfortunately, many of my pictures were lost due to a memory card corruption :(

PANNING.
My very cooperative friend Shi Hui, helped me with these panning shots. They were shot at the Vivocity rooftop. My panning concept, as mentioned in an earlier blog post, was to have a moving human subject as opposed to a train, a car, or a bus. I didn't want to go with the typical moving targets as I felt they were too normal and boring.

Motion Blur
Taken on our FP photoshoot day, I like how the blurred-ness of Kris' feet gives people the impression that she's really moving through the air. That was my intended effect.

-----------------

After taking all these photos, I've realized that Dance photography is really hard to capture. Any form of movement is hard to capture effectively and aesthetically. It's difficult to take good shots that make the subject look good. Seriously. I only truly appreciated the photographers that snap away during my performances after I tried being in their shoes for a night. x_____x

Still, it was really fun. Though I deleted more photos than the ones I actually kept, it was a good learning experience. I really enjoyed doing dance photography. I'd like to explore it more.
