Assignment 3: Focal Length.

For this assignment, we were supposed to play around with the focal length of our cameras in order to obtain 3 different kinds of shots:
1) Close Up (long focal length)
2) Perspective (short focal length)
3) Zoom Shot (changing focal length while taking the photo)

On top of all that, we also had to take a photo based on this title:
"Metaphor of a smile."
No direct smiles were supposed to be included in the photo, the meaning had to be inferred. DIFFICULTTTT.

So here are all the shots I took for this assignment. (including my trials and experiments)

1) Close Ups

I was lucky enough to find this bug on one of the walls in my hall! It was such an obedient model, even when I was snapping furiously and noisily around it, it didn't budge an inch! So I got my close up shots easily.

The cute and obedient bug's profile :)

2) Perspective

Perspective shot taken at the Yong Siew Toh conversatory of music! The place is simply beautiful. I love the architecture there and the design of the building.

This is a picture of some pretty plants growing on a wall. I thought this was an interesting perspective since it kind of looks like a field of plants and not a vertical WALL of plants.

3) Zoom shot

ZOOM trial taken at church!

There was a beautiful Christmas tree at Ngee Ann City and i couldn't resist taking some pictures of it! :) The effect of the lights turned out lovely, I think.

This was a rather amusing shot for me to take, the lights created a lightning-like effect, as if demonstrating the high voltage that the sign was warning us about.

Another HIGH VOLTAGE ZOOM.

Metaphor of smile

This was a difficult theme, as we couldn't use figures or people or toys to demonstrate the smile.
So the concept I thought of was of bargain discounts in shops.

Sales and great discounts are some things that never fail to make Singaporeans happy. They can be willing to squeeze with others, brave traffic jams, and go out of their way to purchase things from places having sales. I thought that signs displaying great discounts were good metaphors for smiles, since they're something that everyone can relate to and react to instantly.

This was what my photo looked like BEFORE post-processing:

Metaphor of a smile--BEFORE editing.

Metaphor of a smile--AFTER editing. I tweaked the contrast and brightness in order to give a warm, glowing effect to the photo. This kind of photos always give me a feeling of warmth. I thought that this warmth, coupled with the concept of bargains and discounts bringing happiness would be successful in bringing a smile to a person's face. Hence, the metaphor of a smile.
